What if Greek vase painting had another category of figures — not black figures or red figures, but hydro figures?
The sea was everywhere in the ancient Greek world. Yet within the surviving imagery, the human body actually swimming remains an unexpectedly uncommon sight.
There are swimmers. There are bathers. There are divers. Enough to know that the image existed — but not enough to form the rich visual vocabulary we find around so many other expressions of the human body.
HYDRO FIGURES begins with this absence.
Not as an attempt to reconstruct what has been lost, but to imagine what might have been pictured.

Τι θα συνέβαινε αν η αρχαιοελληνική αγγειογραφία είχε μία ακόμη εικονογραφική κατηγορία — όχι μελανόμορφη ή ερυθρόμορφη, αλλά HYDRO FIGURES;
Η θάλασσα ήταν πανταχού παρούσα στον αρχαίο ελληνικό κόσμο. Κι όμως, μέσα στο σωζόμενο εικονογραφικό corpus, η ανθρώπινη μορφή εν ώρα κολύμβησης παραμένει μια αναπάντεχα σπάνια εικόνα.
Υπάρχουν κολυμβητές. Υπάρχουν λουόμενοι. Υπάρχουν δύτες. Αρκετοί ώστε να γνωρίζουμε ότι η εικόνα υπήρξε — όχι όμως αρκετοί ώστε να σχηματίζουν το πλούσιο εικαστικό λεξιλόγιο που συναντάμε γύρω από τόσες άλλες εκφράσεις και κινήσεις του ανθρώπινου σώματος.
Το HYDRO FIGURES ξεκινά από αυτή την απουσία.
Όχι ως προσπάθεια ανακατασκευής μιας εικόνας που χάθηκε, αλλά ως απόπειρα να φανταστούμε εκείνη που θα μπορούσε να είχε υπάρξει.
